In the late 1990s it became clear that vernacular architecture as a field of study needed a forum to collate the various work being done. It was felt that establishing a journal would be the best vehicle for this.
Dr Antonia Malan championed the project and established the VASSA Journal with seed funding from the City of Cape Town.
The journal has come out bi-annually ever since July 1999.

How to Submit your Research for Publication
It is one of the core principles of VASSA that you need not be an architect to be a member.
Similarly, you need not be a professional researcher to contribute to the journal.
Remember, the key local research on vernacular architecture – that of James Walton – was his hobby.
The journal editorial committee will help you work your raw material into a published article.
Contact publications@vassa.org.za to start your journey to becoming part of the research corpus.
