In October 2004 an exhibition was mounted to trace the vernacular architecture tradition of the Western Cape, through the links that exist between need, available materials and indigenous building knowledge.

It located buildings within the landscape, both natural and man-made, to demonstrate the remarkable synergy that exists between form, materials and location.

The exhibition in celebration of the Society’s 40th anniversary, was displayed at the University of Cape Town’s Irma Stern Museum.

The curators, contributors and organisers were all members of the Vernacular Architecture Society.
